After four episodes, I’m ready to declare that this is the best TV show ever, and one day it will rank alongside _The Sopranos_ and the first season of _Twin Peaks_ as a contender for second-best TV show ever (after the incomparable _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_, the show is produced and written by former Buffy writer Drew Z. Greenberg, and the cast includes Buffy/Angel lead Julie Benz. Dexter is a sociopath who has no human emotions, and therefore no natural, internal moral compass, and an unquenchable thirst for blood that drives him to kill. But he has the great grace of being the adopted son of a police officer who (as we see in the hilarious flashbacks) successfully instilled in him a complete moral code that he strictly adheres to on an intellectual level.

Another thing the show does brilliantly is to move at different speeds in parallel

It’s an absolutely brilliant concept (which I assume comes from the novels it’s based on) that It allows the writers to explore the nature of moral behavior and what it means to be human (Dexter is, in a way, an alien). There’s a primary, seemingly seasonal story arc (about Dexter’s cat-and-mouse game with a serial killer), and a secondary arc that involves Dexter’s sister’s police career. The first handful of episodes feature a very strong completed arc about one of Dexter’s police colleagues and a local criminal, while two of the four episodes so far have also included (and played out) a standalone story arc that’s ongoing. I saw the future of how TV seasons are structured, and this is it.

The cast and production are fantastic

While the writing doesn’t quite live up to the brilliance of _House_’s best, it’s done admirably. The only reason you might not want to watch this utterly brilliant show is its frequent use of extremely graphic imagery: there were probably more severed body parts in these first four episodes than in the first four episodes of every other TV show on the air combined. If you can handle that, tune in to be mesmerized by what makes us human — or inhuman.
